How Installers Can Future-Proof Their Business
Installers will soon be required to navigate a series of regulatory changes as the single biggest adjustment comes into force for the new build sector.
Sheldon Cooper, Managing Director at underfloor heating specialists and manufacturer, Ambiente UFH, explains more about the changes afoot and how installers can get prepared to offer solutions that meet the new standards and future proof their business:
Driving the changes required to meet the Government’s pledge to achieve a Net Zero emissions state in the UK by 2050, the upcoming amendments to Part L will be regulated in late 2021 before coming into effect in 2022. These initial changes will affect new build homes which will soon be decarbonised using electrification only.
The collective goal is to ensure that the average new build home produces at least 31% lower CO2 emissions compared to one built to current energy efficiency requirements.
As such, to meet the standards, new properties will soon require heating systems that have a flow temperature of 55 degrees or less. Systems will also require self-regulating control devices to allow zoning within the property.
The new standards are being enforced to help prepare the market to upskill ahead of the gas boiler ban in 2025. So, it’s never been more important for UFH installers to be up to speed on changes, as well as the products and skills required to stay ahead of the competition.
There will be some flexibility on how to meet the targets. However, the Government expects heat pumps will become the primary heating technology for new homes and demand for air source heat pumps is expected to double in the next year.
While heat pumps tick the right boxes, for this technology to work at its most efficient (COP) level, the system needs to run at 35°C – 45°C and this is something that underfloor heating can perfectly support.
Accuracy also becomes imperative when specifying and installing a underfloor heating heat pump and underfloor heating system combination, especially when compared with a traditional gas boiler system. Simply put, if the system is not designed or installed properly, it won’t reach its required efficiency and the knock-on effect of that is increased occupier bills and brand damage to the installer and suppliers.
The key to success is considering the full picture of a new build heating system – the heat source and the underfloor heating – at both the design and installation stage.
